Shooting at Bubbles: GReader Shared Links - the new territory of self-promotion

  • engtech · 1 year ago
    So true.

I try to save promoting my posts for a "this is really awesome!" moment, and it's amazing how often what I think is an awesome post doesn't match the reality of what the rest of the world likes.

What I find works better is stepping aside and letting other people tell you what they like of your content via links/comments. Then throw some promotion juice behind what's already been socially vetted.

our own stuff is never as awesome or blogosphere shattering as we like to
think. I can't count the number of times I have written a post that I
thought was da' bomb only to see it sink like a torpedoed ship :)

I'll share my own posts occasionally, not only in Google Reader, but also in StumbleUpon. One advantage of FriendFeed is that I practice this less in Twitter than I did previously.

I am also completely unable to predict which of my posts will catch the fancy of the Internetters. Although I guess that I should have predicted that a post that included the name "Donna Douglas," coupled with a term that begins with the letter n and rhymes with "rude," would get a lot of traffic.

Yep that bugs me too. Seems like narcissism to subscribe to your own feed and share items from it.

I understand this and both agree/disagree. There are many ways to self-promote, via Twitter, Google Reader, Del.icio.us, FriendFeed, etc. It could be argued I've done each to varying levels. But I do know there are people who use my shared links feed who don't use my RSS feed. I don't share every post I make in my shared link feed, so there is some self-selection there, and I also know that with LinkRiver, Shared Reader, RSSMeme, ReadBurner and Feedheads, Google Reader shared items are growing in importance, so to neglect that medium would be silly.

I will have to grudgingly agree with you.. I guess I'll stop sharing my own articles in GR, even if it's only like 1 or 2 a week.

Hey Steven, I must admit I never thought of this issue. I do share my own feeds on Google Reader, primarily because it causes it to be shared on Feedheads on Facebook. But yes, I do see how that can annoy people on FriendFeed for example. Interesting thoughts, not sure if I'll stop sharing entirely, but don't unsubscribe to me ;)

I think it would only be a problem if you shared each and every link. If you happen to think something you wrote is worth sharing, I don't have a problem with you sharing it. If you're my friend in GReader or FriendFeed then I'm probably already subscribed to your blog anyway - this just puts it on the top of my reading list.
