Shooting at Bubbles: What do you think….

  • webomatica · 1 year ago
Well, I'll chime in. Personally I like the unique take you have on stuff - the non-echochamber of the tech blogosphere. Where you rant about how Windows Vista blows or Web 2.0 data ownership. Some may think it's cynical but it can actually be realistic to get a viewpoint not so kool-aid like.

What I don't like as much is jumping in the middle of personal tech blogosphere rants like scoble did this and dave winer did that. But I still find that entertaining.

Just please don't burn out on the blog stuff and let your health suffer :)
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
I for the most part don't like jumping in the middle per se of the fuss that always seems to revolve around the A-Listers like Scoble and Winer but sometimes they say things - or assume things - that just get my goat. On that note I have been thinking up something that will let me keep their nonsense out of WinExtra but still point out how stupid and prsumptious that sound sometime - which they aren't alone in.

thanks for the positive word though .. kinda needing them today.
  • Paul OFlaherty · 1 year ago
Steven, it's all about the writing for me. I mostly ready WinExtra through the feed, and you've got me hooked that way (as I've explained before).. but when I do click through I must admit to loving the look.

The only thing I don't like is the use of a 3rd party commenting service. I'd hate to see what happens when they go under.
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
Glad I continue to keep you "hooked" but the moment I don't youmake sure to let me know and why. Long time readers are somethign that every blogger should treasure because they are the ones that can keep you true to your mission and should never be discounted.

As for Disqus all I can ask is give them some time as they are still in early stages, As Arni stated below Daniel and the crew at Disqus do read the blog and have taken things mentioned in previous posts into consideration. I think concidering the things I have gathered from what Daniel has said Disqus is not just being designed for the blogger but also for the regular reader - time will tell.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Thanks for the vote of confidence!

To everyone: yes, "going under" is a valid concerns when you're dealing with "third party" service of any sort. With that said, this is no fly by night operation. And while we can tout legitimacy until we're blue in the face, we'd rather answer with functionality. Export is always available and we are only moving more open.
  • Paul OFlaherty · 1 year ago
Worse still, after a few comments here the commenting system tells me that I'm still posting anonymously and because of the system this comment will appear above my previous one and out of context.
  • Arni · 1 year ago
Actually, it appears below your previous post, as it should :)

As for the "Anon" posting, Disqus staff have already agreed that this is not the perfect name for that button. They do, however, peak at this blog from time to time and read comments and try to improve the system, which is more or less still in it's infancy, so they will more than likely read your comment. You could also go to their forums and post your thoughts there, to be sure they'll get them. To get rid of the "Post Anonymously" button, you'll need register with their service (as I did), but I can understand people not wanting to do so. I do, however, also understand the point behind the whole Disqus system; collecting all you comments from all blogs that use the system, in one place. I've used that to look up on old comments, and sure enough it does as advertised.

That being said, I too agree with your thoughts of what will happen when Disqus goes under or simply quits. All comments, bye bye.
  • Karoli · 1 year ago
I'm registered with their system -- I use their service on my own blog. Under Options it shows me as logged in but doesn't autofill the fields to comment here, so I still have to fill them in to post. Drives me nuts.

I've heard of this issue from a couple people, but we've been able to stamp it out for most.

I may have asked you this before, but to reaffirm: which browser are you using? Have you tried doing a fresh refresh?
  • Arni · 1 year ago
I've tried and tried everything. This only happens in Firefox, and I will NOT change to IE just to get your system working.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Trust me, the last thing I'd want is for someone to venture over to IE.
  • Karoli · 1 year ago
I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.1.1 and i've definitely tried the hard refresh...no joy.
  • Arni · 1 year ago
What I like about it is the same as with Webomatica... I like your personal touch on all the issues discusses. Sure they're grumpy, but I don't think the blog would be half as entertaining if you were some perpetually happy guy :D
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
As one who has known me for many years Arni you know I value your opinion - so thanks.
  • Karoli · 1 year ago
I like the fact that you're outspoken and don't worry about whose egos might get bruised, and I also like the fact that you write about what you want to write about whether it's on Techmeme or not. You have the voice of reality.

I also like that you link out to little bloggers like me. :)
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
At my age Karoli I'm getting to old to really give a shit if people don't like my opinion - after all there is always the Next button they can click :)

As for following the Techmeme for all one's stories and a way to advance one's popularity shows in my opinion a lack of ability of coming up with original thoughts - or a fear of being the first one out the gate with an idea or thought because then there is no guarantee of being able to climb the racks or gain readership.

When if comes to linking out to lesser known bloggers - well that in my opinion is an obligation that every blogger who is slowly climbing the ranks of popularity should be doing but doing so means that that blogger has done either or both of two things - they have added meaningful commentary to an ongoing meme or they have an original thought that deserves a wider range of readers.

To link to any blogger regardless of where they rank just to advance one's own standing does no one any favors - especially your readers.

I just like the "it's not all peaches and creme" approach to posting.

Personally, I get bored before I'm even half way through my feeds. Too many people saying pretty much the same thing on the same topics. WinExtra usually takes a different spin, which I find more interesting.

After all "a cranky old fart wandering the internet causing mayhem as he goes" reflects my attitude perfectly. (Ok, I'm a furry old fart, but you get the idea...lol)

Always an enjoyable read, Steven. Keep up the good work.

(Oh, and before I forget, Bill's software reviews was a great addition!)
  • Bill_Vincent · 1 year ago
Thanks for the shouts, Joe and Gorgeous, I'm still trying to establish a schedule for the reviews. The "series" reviews generally end up being further apart than I'd like. One I figure out how to juggle full-time job, kids, home repairs, and the needs of my lovely wife, they should even out:)
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
while I thank a furry ol' farts for the kind words Ruby on the other hand has a few words for you too :)

Well it is a great looking site - thoguht I was on my site for two seconds though - we use the same template :-)

I read you via RSS feeds and enjoy what I see here.
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
I noticed that the first time I visited your site as well .. had a bit of a double take :) but I'm glad you like what you read - I also subscribed to your site as well.
  • joemontana · 1 year ago
I like the blog and the forums both. I like the way you don't beat around the bush, you get right to the point with the blog.
The forums are a big part of my day, I always check in to see how folks are doing. I"m starting to feel that way about the blog also, sort of a sense of "ownership"

As the prior poster said, please don't let your health suffer worrying about it!

    Joe

I forgot to mention. I also like Bills' software reviews.
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
I'm glad to hear that the blog is also becoming a natural part of your reading day as I know you have been a long time member of the forums.
  • James · 1 year ago
Like most of the other commentors, I like the all bull shit aside approach you have. Your blog keeps me informed of what's happening in the greater blogshepre, something I tried doing on my own but got burned out rather quickly reading about things that aren't exactly my favorite subjects.

I like you calling out the other A-list because it keeps me informed on what they're is up to in an entertaining way. However, the subjects of those posts can be a tad much at times. ;)

    Keep it up!
  • StevenHodson · 1 year ago
I'll do my best James - thanks,
